Mammary prosthesis are used to increase the size of the breast, either to treat hypomastia or just to increase the size of a normal breast.
Implants are filled with latest generation silicone. The silicone gel is a cohesive gel that, in case the prosthesis breaks in the middle, it does not break out but sticks together.
The incision generally used is performed on the lower periareolar area, so that it is not visible, in comparison with the submammary incision which cuts the breast and is easily seen.
The retro-muscular (behind the muscle) technique is the one used most frequently, since it has a more natural effect and involves a lower risk of encapsulation and rippling
(ridging on the upper surface of the breast due to thin skin).
